We’ll get down to business with committee meetings on Saturday, Oct. 28, and a welcome reception sponsored by the Engineered Wood Technology Association. On Sunday, Oct. 29, it’s time for the annual golf and tennis tournaments. Both events will take place on the Hyatt grounds. Subcommittees will get back to work on Sunday afternoon. The Info Fair exhibition and reception will take place Sunday evening.

Dr. Loren Scott

On Monday, Oct. 30, Dr. Loren Scott, Louisiana economist, will address the general session with an update on the Gulf Coast rebuilding. A series of roundtable discussions will follow the general session. The Marketing Advisory Committee will meet Monday afternoon, followed by a reception and dinner in the evening. The APA Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Dr. Loren Scott is the president of Loren C. Scott & Associates, a 23-year-old economic consulting firm. He is one of the 32-member National Business Economic Issues Council, which meets quarterly to discuss issues of state, national and international interest. He was a professor of economics at Louisiana State University and chaired the economic department for 13 years.


Following the general session, you’ll have the opportunity to join in small-group discussions on low-rise commercial construction opportunities, residential Big Builder topics and employee recruitment and retention. The roundtables will be led by recognized experts in their fields.

Discussion Leader: John Langdon, AIA, FreemanWhite

FreemanWhite is a North Carolina-based architectural and design engineering firm that specializes in senior living and healthcare facilities. The firm’s recently completed Germantown senior living complex near Memphis, Tennessee, was constructed with engineered wood products, including I-joists, glulam and plywood.

With more than 18 years of experience as an architect, FreemanWhite associate John Langdon provides programming and schematic design assistance on major senior living and nursing facility projects. He will discuss design decisions that went into the Germantown project and lead a discussion on opportunities in low-rise commercial projects.

Learn from one of the largest home building companies about issues and trends in home construction. What are the greatest design challenges that affect structural building materials? What are the factors that influence the specification for wall and floor sheathing materials? What kind of market
trends will shape the structural design of North American homes?

John Mikkelson has held various managerial and executive positions with the Centex Homes organization and CTX Builders Supply, which is a division of Centex Homes. He has been involved in component manufacturing and forest product distribution, as well as the expansion efforts of the vertical integration business model that strives to improve the supply chain efficiency.

Finding and Keeping Quality Employees
Discussion Leader: Carl Jansen, President, Search North America, Inc.

Recruiting and retaining well-trained and highly motivated employees in the forest products industry has probably never been more difficult than it is now. This session will explore the reasons behind the skilled employee shortages and offer some ideas on meeting the challenge of finding and keeping quality employees at all levels and disciplines.

Carl Jansen is a Certified Personnel Consultant with more than three decades of experience in the forest products industry, including 26 years as a professional recruiter for forest products industry clients in North and South America, Europe, the Far East and Africa. He holds a B.S. degree in engineering from UCLA and an M.B.A. in production management from UC Berkeley.

APA staff will provide updates on the year's activities, and Market Research Director Craig Adair will present his market forecast. Plus, a panel of three commercial design professionals will present their recent projects and talk about the factors that influence their product specifications. A construction engineer, Dube was recognized in the recent 40 Under 40 competition. One of his recent projects, the YMCA Family Fitness Center in Westborough, Mass., features glulam beams and wood panel decking over the pool area.

Steven Siegel provides structural consulting and engineering services to architects, developers, contractors, colleges, property owners, insurance companies and government organizations. His firm has provided structural design of institutional, large residential and commercial projects, including the recently completed Village Green in Plymouth, Mass.


Matt Brady

A winner in the 40 Under 40 competition, Matt Brady is an architect who successfully reopened his firm’s San Diego office in 2000. The firm’s recent Eastlake Design District project in Chula Vista featured panelized plywood roof decks over four buildings, totaling 500,000 square feet.
