Help Desk Question: Staples and other alternate fasteners

APA Help DeskQuestion: When can I use staples instead of nails? Does APA have a recommendation either way, and if so what size staple is required?

Answer: APA’s recommendations for fastening wood structural panels to wood framing are limited to nails; however, staples or other alternate fasteners may be used according to specifically recognized technical data, such as 2006 International Building Code Table 2304.9.1, 2006 IRC Table R602.3(2) or the International Staple Nail and Tool Association’s ICC ES Report ESR-1539. The appropriate staple size typically depends on the load and spacing requirements.
