Help Desk Question: Allowable loads and portal wall construction

APA Help DeskQuestion: Where can I find allowable lateral loads for APA-rated portal wall construction?

Answer: As with all prescriptive wall bracing methods, allowable loads are not established for the alternate narrow wall bracing without hold downs method. However, the portal frame with hold downs method originally developed by APA as an alternate narrow wall bracing method may also be used within a designed lateral load resisting system. Allowable load design values for the with hold downs portal frame are published in APA Technical Topic TT-100: A Portal Frame With Hold Downs For Engineered Applications.

TT-100 provides descriptions and illustrations for constructing the APA Narrow Braced Wall/Portal Frame as narrow as 16 inches. TT-100 also includes background and a summary of test results.
