The Inside View Project
A demonstration home in the Chicago area
The Inside View Demonstration Home gives building professionals—including architects, builders, code officials, and building designers—a look at energy-efficient framing practices that
- conserve energy
- speed construction
- reduce labor
- decrease waste
- exceed structural requirements
- save homeowners money on their energy bills
using Advanced Framing techniques and a premium but cost-effective I-joist floor system.
The Inside View Home was constructed by Beechen & Dill, a high performance home builder with a long history in the Chicagoland area. The finished two story, 2,880 square foot home will feature 3 to 4 bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths, a large kitchen opening to a two story Great Room and a 2-car garage. This home, called The Keystone by Beechen & Dill, was specifically designed using the feedback Beechen & Dill received from their buyers who do not need a formal living room. They took that formal living room space and made all the other rooms much larger.
Advanced Framing: Advantages for the Builder and the Homeowner
The Inside View home incorporates Advanced Framing techniques that use familiar building materials and methods to maximize materials usage and energy efficiency.
The Inside View Home uses 2x6 studs spaced 24 inches on center instead of 2x4s spaced at 16 inches. This simplifies installation while providing increased space for more insulation.
For the builder, 2x6 advanced framing is a cost-effective way to meet requirements of the energy code and above-code programs like Energy Star. For the homeowner, advanced framing results in a comfortable home with superior energy efficiency. And advanced framing is a green building strategy that uses a renewable resource with maximum economy for environmental sustainability.
The increased depth and width in the wall cavities leaves much more room for insulation while maintaining excellent structural integrity, thanks to continuous sheathing with wood structural panels.
Floors: A Premium, Cost-effective System
The floor system featured in the Inside View Home uses deeper, stiffer and stronger I-joists and thicker floor sheathing. The floor sheathing is 7/8 Performance Category OSB or plywood structural panels. The deeper I-joists and thicker sheathing make a high performance yet cost effective floor. The floor system also allows quicker returns on builder’s capital by reducing time under construction. Here are some details on the Inside View Floor System.
