ANSI 405 establishes the minimum performance requirements that adhesives must meet before they can be used in the manufacture of structural glued laminated timber (glulam). The standard applies to all new adhesive types — regardless of chemistry — and requires a comprehensive battery of screening tests covering durability, moisture resistance, elevated-temperature strength, creep behavior, and fire performance, followed by an in-plant qualification. For manufacturers, specifiers, and code officials, ANSI 405 provides a single, performance-based benchmark that ensures any adhesive approved for glulam will maintain reliable bond integrity under the full range of service and exposure conditions these structural members may encounter.

ANSI 405 provides a unified framework for evaluating adhesives used in structural glued laminated timber (glulam). It is intended for adhesive manufacturers seeking product approval, glulam laminators, accredited inspection agencies, and design professionals who need assurance that adhesives meet rigorous structural and durability benchmarks.
Covers adhesives used for both face bond and end joint applications in structural glulam
Applies to all new adhesive types proposed for use in glulam, regardless of adhesive chemistry
Requires testing by or under the witness of a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025
Provides a streamlined path for previously approved adhesives with minor formulation changes, requiring only ASTM D2559 testing and in-plant qualification
Does not apply to adhesives previously approved under AITC 405-92 or ANSI/AITC A190.1-2002
Exterior exposure durability through cyclic boil testing (ASTM D3434) or boil-dry-freeze testing (CSA O112.9)
Wet-use bond performance under moisture and temperature cycling (ASTM D2559, ASTM D1151)
Shear strength retention at elevated temperatures up to 428°F / 220°C (ASTM D7247)
Creep resistance under sustained load at high temperature (CSA O112.9)
Resistance to cyclic laboratory aging conditions (ASTM D1183)
Small-scale flame performance to resist heat-induced delamination (CSA O177)
Full-scale fire endurance testing on a loaded glulam beam with a minimum 60-minute fire-resistance rating (ASTM E119, ANSI/UL 263, or CAN/ULC S101)
In-plant qualification in accordance with ANSI A190.1 before production use

In December 2023, the APA Standards Committee on ANSI 405, Standard for Adhesives for Use in Structural Glued Laminated Timber, voted to approve this national standard under the consensus process accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This national standard, designated as ANSI 405-2023, supersedes ANSI 405-2018 with the addition of a full-scale fire test for glulam adhesive approval.
