ANSI/APA PRR 410 establishes the performance requirements, test methods, and quality assurance procedures for engineered wood rim boards used in wood-frame construction. The standard applies to rim boards manufactured from wood structural panels, structural composite lumber (SCL), and structural glued laminated timber (glulam), providing a consistent framework for evaluating their ability to transfer horizontal and vertical loads, support fastener connections, and perform reliably within floor and roof assemblies. For manufacturers, specifiers, and code officials, PRR 410 offers a unified basis for product qualification, grading, and certification — ensuring that engineered wood rim boards meet recognized structural performance benchmarks before they reach the jobsite.

ANSI/APA PRR 410 provides a comprehensive framework for qualifying and certifying engineered wood rim boards, covering everything from dimensional tolerances and structural performance testing to quality assurance and product marking. It serves manufacturers seeking product certification, specifiers and engineers selecting rim boards for wood-frame assemblies, and code officials verifying compliance with recognized performance benchmarks.
Applies to engineered wood rim boards manufactured from wood structural panels, structural composite lumber (SCL), and structural glued laminated timber (glulam)
Covers rim boards used in wood floor and roof assemblies, installed in load-bearing or non-load-bearing walls perpendicular or parallel to joist framing
Intended for dry service conditions where the mean equilibrium moisture content of solid-sawn lumber is less than 16%
Proprietary wood rim board products fall outside the scope of this standard and may be qualified under ASTM D7672
Dimensions and tolerances for rim board thickness (minimum 1 inch to 1-1/4 inches depending on grade) and depth (up to 24 inches), with specific provisions for glulam moisture-related depth changes
Five rim board performance grades (A, B1, B2, C1, C2) with minimum required test values for horizontal load transfer, uniform vertical load capacity, lag screw lateral resistance, and concentrated vertical load capacity
Six standardized test methods (RB-1 through RB-6) addressing horizontal load transfer, uniform vertical compression, lag screw resistance, concentrated vertical load, edge nailing durability, and edgewise bending properties
Physical property criteria including thickness swell, density, and internal bond for applicable product types
Quality assurance requirements tied to referenced product standards, with ongoing process control, mechanical and physical property testing, and oversight by a qualified agency
Product marking and certification requirements, including rim board grade, performance category or nominal thickness, mill identification, qualified agency logo, and the symbol "ANSI PRR 410"
