The 2021 and 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) introduced new and evolving energy efficiency requirements that impact structural building systems. From increased insulation and air sealing to the integration of continuous insulation and advanced framing techniques, these changes create new challenges and opportunities for designers, engineers, and builders. Additionally, as energy codes encourage moving ductwork into conditioned spaces, engineered wood product (EWP) floor systems offer an efficient and adaptable solution that maintains structural integrity and performance.
This session explores the structural implications of these energy code updates, including potential effects on wall bracing, load paths, moisture management, and EWP floor systems. Attendees will gain practical insight into navigating these structural challenges while ensuring compliance with advanced energy codes – balancing efficiency, durability, and structural performance.
