Exemption of Special Inspection on Glulam Based on the 2019 California Building Code

Technical Topic

For many years, the California Division of the State Architect (DSA) has required continuous special inspection of structural glued laminated timber (glulam) used under its jurisdiction. The DSA has exempted this requirement pertaining to all of California’s K-12 schools and community colleges in the California Building Code (CBC) for a range of glulam products since 2007, which is intended to permit typical “stock” glulam beams to be used without special inspection.

This publication is designed for: architects, engineers, designers, builders

This publication clarifies the intent of the CBC exemption for special inspection on glulam outlined in Section 1705.5.4.
