APA System Report 101: Design for Combined Shear and Uplift from Wind

System Report

This APA system report describes a system that uses wood structural panels to resist uplift from wind. When using wood structural panels that are required to resist lateral loads and normal wind load requirements of the International Building Code (IBC) Section 1609.4.4.1, Chapter 30 of the ASCE-7 or International Residential Code (IRC) Section R301.2.1, additional wind uplift resistance from the panel can be achieved by providing additional nails to the shear nailing at the top and bottom of the panel.

This publication is designed for: engineers, architects, designers, building officials

This publication explains how to use additional nails to resist uplift from wind. It includes several tables, diagrams, reference documents and detailed installation guidance.

Key sections include:

  • System description

  • Methodology

  • Design capabilities

  • Step-by-step design examples

  • Installation requirements

  • Limitations
